SPRAY SKIRT, PADDLE LEASH & SPARE BREAKDOWN PADDLE
[ ] Neoprene Spray Deck
[ ] Coiled Paddle Leash
[ ] 4-Piece Spare Paddle

  • Neoprene Spray Deck: a stretchy cover that seals the cockpit. Match the size to your boat's cockpit make and model.
  • Coiled Paddle Leash: a coiled cord that stretches and retracts. Check the maker's guidance for how and where to attach.
  • 4-Piece Spare Paddle: a paddle that breaks into four sections to store. Confirm it fits in your boat's storage.
  1. Learn the wet exit before you need it. A spray skirt keeps water out and also keeps you in. Practice releasing it and exiting in calm shallow water with a partner nearby. Why it matters: panic is the main risk in a capsize, and practice replaces panic with habit.
  2. Make sure the leash can release. A leash keeps your paddle close, but a tangled leash can trap you. Learn how your leash releases, and keep it clear of your hands and legs.
  3. Carry a backup you can reach. A lost paddle in wind or current is an emergency. Keep the spare within reach, and paddle near shore until you are confident.

Gear types only.

  • Spray skirt sized to your cockpit
  • Paddle leash
  • Breakdown (multi-piece) spare paddle
  • Paddle float for re-entry practice
  • Wild Dirt clothing and headwear for sun on the water (clothing and headwear categories)

Rules for paddle craft, required equipment and where you can paddle vary by waterway and state. Check current local rules with the U.S. Coast Guard (uscgboating.org), your state boating agency and the managing agency: nps.gov, fs.usda.gov or your state park website. Consider taking a paddling course from a qualified instructor before using a spray skirt in open water.

Practice the scary part in calm water, and the real thing feels manageable. Built by explorers, for the trail.

Spray skirt (spray deck)

  • Check that it fits snugly over the rim without a gap
  • Find and practice the release loop (grab loop) before you paddle
  • Practice exiting the boat with the skirt on, in calm shallow water with a partner
  • Rinse and dry the skirt after each trip

Paddle leash

  • Coiled Paddle Leash attached to the paddle shaft and to the boat or your wrist, as the maker directs
  • Check that the leash will not tangle when you paddle
  • Make sure you can release it quickly
  • Check clips, cord and stitching for wear

Spare paddle

  • 4-Piece Spare Paddle assembled once at home
  • Stowed on the deck or inside the boat where you can reach it on the water
  • Secured so it does not float away
  • Check that all four pieces lock together without play

Practice

  • Practice a wet exit with a partner in calm shallow water
  • Practice a re-entry with your spare gear
