SAND-FREE GROUND BLANKET & COMPACT POP-UP CANOPY
[ ] Water-Resistant Blanket
[ ] Ground Pegs
[ ] 24-Can Soft Cooler
[ ] Trash Bag

  • Water-Resistant Blanket: the owner's spec. Water-resistant is not waterproof, so check the maker's rating.
  • Ground Pegs: work in soil and grass. On sand or hard ground use weights instead.
  • 24-Can Soft Cooler: the owner's spec. A soft cooler is light to carry but holds ice for a shorter time than a hard cooler, so check the maker's claims.
  1. Check the sky before you set up. Look at the forecast at weather.gov. Take the canopy down if wind picks up, and head for shelter if you hear thunder. A canopy is not lightning shelter.
  2. Secure everything. Peg or weigh the blanket and canopy. An unsecured canopy can lift in a gust and hurt someone.
  3. Keep food safe. Keep cold food in the cooler and out of direct sun. The USDA recommends keeping cold food at 40 degrees F or below. See foodsafety.gov for current guidance.

Gear types only.

  • Water-resistant picnic blanket with a sand-shedding or backing layer

  • Wild Dirt headwear for shade on bright days (headwear category)

Many parks and beaches have rules on canopies, tents, stakes, fires, grills, alcohol and group size, and some require permits for large groups. Check current local rules with the park, beach or city site, or nps.gov, fs.usda.gov or your state park site.

A good picnic is simple: shade, good food and an easy clean-up. Built by explorers, for long afternoons outside.
