DIRTY WATER COLLECTION BLADDER VS. CLEAN BOTTLE ROUTING
[ ] 3L Dirty Canteen
[ ] Wide-Mouth Clean Jug
[ ] Inline Quick-Disconnects

  • 3L Dirty Canteen: the owner's number. Choose a size you can carry full from the source.
  • Wide-Mouth Clean Jug: easy to fill and easy to clean. Check it is food-safe.
  • Inline Quick-Disconnects: fittings that connect hoses and bottles. Check compatibility with your filter and test for leaks.
  1. Name the sides. Say "dirty" and "clean" out loud when you handle them. Why it matters: cross-contamination can undo all your filtering.
  2. Keep the clean end clean. Cap the clean jug and the filter outlet when not in use. Clean your hands before touching either.
  3. Camp away from water. Follow Leave No Trace guidance for distance from water and for washing. See lnt.org and your park website for current rules.

Gear types only.

  • Collapsible dirty-water bladder
  • Wide-mouth clean jug or bottle
  • Quick-disconnect fittings and spare seals
  • Marker or colored tape for labels
  • Wild Dirt drinkware for the clean side of your kit (drinkware category)

Water access, camping distance from water and washing rules vary by park, forest or area. Check current local rules before you go. Start with nps.gov, fs.usda.gov, blm.gov or your state park site, and for water treatment guidance, cdc.gov and epa.gov.

Two paths, never crossed. Dirty in, clean out. Built by explorers, for the trail.

Two sides, two colors

  • 3L Dirty Canteen, marked as the dirty side
  • Wide-Mouth Clean Jug, marked as the clean side
  • Use different colors or labels so you never mix them up in the dark
  • Pack them in different parts of your bag

The route

  • Inline Quick-Disconnects fitted between the canteen, the filter and the jug
  • Check that fittings click and seal before the first use
  • Spare O-rings or gaskets packed
  • Keep the filter outlet end clean and covered

At camp

  • Fill the dirty canteen at the source, well away from camp
  • Filter or treat as your plan says, into the clean jug
  • Keep the clean jug capped, and set it on a clean surface
  • Wash hands away from the water source

Cleaning

  • Rinse the dirty canteen with clean water after each trip
  • Dry everything with the lids open
  • Never store the clean jug with the dirty one

Mistakes to catch

  • Do not drink from the dirty side
  • Do not dip the clean jug into the source
  • Do not set the filter outlet on the ground
