8X42 WATERPROOF BINOCULARS & MONOCULAR HARNESS
[ ] 8x42 Binos
[ ] Chest Rig Harness
[ ] Microfiber Cloth
[ ] Field Notebook

  • 8x42 Binos: the owner's spec. The first number is magnification and the second is the front lens size in millimeters. Check the maker for waterproof and fog-proof ratings.
  • Chest Rig Harness: keeps the binos close and your hands free.
  • Field Notebook: water-resistant paper helps in rain.
  1. Use the optics to keep your distance. If you notice an animal change what it is doing because of you, back up. Why it matters: stressed wildlife can flee, abandon young or act defensively.
  2. Watch your footing. Looking through binos while you walk is a good way to trip. Stop, then look.
  3. Know the park's wildlife distance rules. They are set by the agency and differ by park and species. Check nps.gov or the managing agency's page for your area.

Gear types only.

  • 8x42 waterproof binoculars
  • Chest harness for binoculars or a monocular
  • Microfiber lens cloth
  • Weatherproof field notebook and pencil
  • Wild Dirt headwear for long sits on the trail (headwear category)

Wildlife viewing, drone use, feeding, off-trail travel and distance rules are set by the land agency and vary by park and species. Check current local rules before you go. Start with nps.gov, fs.usda.gov, blm.gov or your state park website.

Look close, stay far and write it down. Built by explorers, for the trail.
