Great Kobuk Sand Dunes

  • Kobuk Valley in Alaska protects 61 miles of the Kobuk River and vast Arctic sand dunes formed by glaciers. The Great Kobuk, Little Kobuk, and Hunt River dunes can reach 100 feet high and 100 °F in summer. Twice yearly, nearly half a million caribou migrate across the dunes and nearby river bluffs where ancient fossils are exposed.
