Channel Islands National Park Highlights

Channel Islands National Park sits off the California coast, and you reach it by boat or small plane. Anacapa and Santa Cruz are the two islands most visitors start with. Both reward an early start, a full water bottle and a willingness to climb. Here are the top three sights, ranked.

Top Picks: The Top 3 Sights

  1. Anacapa Arch Rock. A natural stone arch standing in the sea off the east end of Anacapa. You see it from the boat on the way in, and again from the cliff-top trails.

  2. Santa Cruz Island's Cavern Point. Sea cliffs drop to the channel, with kelp beds below and a good chance of whales in season.

  3. Inspiration Point, Anacapa. A short walk from the landing to a headland with views along the island chain.

1. Anacapa Arch Rock

Anacapa is really a string of small islets, and Arch Rock is its landmark. The island's volcanic rock is cut by wave action into cliffs, caves and this arch. Gulls and cormorants crowd the ledges, and the water around it is often busy with seals.

2. Santa Cruz Island

Santa Cruz is the biggest island in the park, with rugged ridges, sea caves and coves. The Scorpion Anchorage side gives you easy access to trails that climb straight to the cliff tops. Kayakers paddle the coast for the sea caves when conditions allow.

3. Inspiration Point

The trail to Inspiration Point is short and mostly flat once you are up on the island. Pack binoculars: seabirds nest along the cliffs, and the view runs west along Middle and West Anacapa.

Quick Specs for the Top 3

  • Anacapa Arch Rock: Seen from the boat or from the east end of East Anacapa. The island's loop trails total about 2 miles, easy, after a climb of more than 150 steps from the landing.

  • Santa Cruz (Cavern Point Loop): About 2 miles round trip from Scorpion Anchorage, a steady climb to the cliff tops, 1–2 hours, moderate.

  • Inspiration Point: About 1.5 miles round trip from the Anacapa landing, mostly flat on top, about 1 hour, easy.

Timing Tip

Book the earliest boat you can. Morning seas are usually calmer, and you get more hours on the island. Spring brings wildflowers and nesting birds, while late summer and fall bring the clearest water for kayaking.

Scenic Viewpoints Along the Way

  • Inspiration Point, Anacapa: Middle and West Anacapa stretching away to the west, best in morning light.

  • Cavern Point, Santa Cruz: High sea cliffs above the channel, a good place to watch for whales.

  • Potato Harbor Overlook, Santa Cruz: A curved cove far below the cliffs.

  • The boat ride in: Arch Rock and the sea cliffs of East Anacapa from the water, with dolphins often riding the bow wake.

Photography and Timing Tips

Boat schedules decide your light more than you do, so plan around them. Morning on the water gives soft, low light on Arch Rock. On the cliffs, late-morning sun lights the coves and turns the water in Potato Harbor a clear blue. If your return boat leaves in the afternoon, you may catch warm golden hour light on the ride back, but sunrise and sunset shoots are limited by ferry times. Check the schedule before you plan a sunset shot. Shoot Arch Rock from the boat with a fast shutter, since the deck moves.

Quick Tips

  • Pack in everything you need: food, water per person for the whole day and layers. Island facilities are minimal.

  • Wind and fog can roll in fast, so bring a windbreaker even on a warm day.

  • Stay on trail. Cliff edges are crumbly, and nesting birds and fragile plants are everywhere.

  • Pack it out. Leave No Trace applies on the islands as much as anywhere.

Gear and Boat Notes

Wear shoes with real grip for the steps and cliff-top dirt. Bring binoculars, sunscreen and a dry bag if you plan to paddle.

Seasickness Note

The channel can be rough. If you are prone to it, take your remedy before boarding, sit low and near the middle of the boat, and keep your eyes on the horizon.
