Michigan State Parks Travel Guide

Michigan's islands are worlds apart, scattered across the Great Lakes. From horse-drawn carriages on Mackinac to wilderness cabins on Lime Island and city skyline views from Belle Isle, each one tells a different story. Add Beaver Island, remote and rugged, though not a state park, and you've got a collection of lake escapes unlike anywhere else in the Midwest.
Where history, wilderness, and skyline views meet the water, Michigan’s island escapes.
How to Get There
Mackinac Island State Park: Ferry from Mackinaw City or St. Ignace (20–30 minutes). The nearest airport is Pellston Regional (PLN).
Belle Isle Park: Drive across the MacArthur Bridge from downtown Detroit. The nearest airport is Detroit Metro (DTW).
Lime Island State Recreation Area: Access by private boat or water taxi from Raber or the St. Marys River area. The nearest airport is Chippewa County (CIU).
Beaver Island: Ferry from Charlevoix (2 hours) or flights from Charlevoix Airport (CVX).
Know Before You Go
No cars on Mackinac Island: Biking and horse-drawn carriages only.
Belle Isle requires a Recreation Passport: Standard for Michigan state parks.
Lime Island is primitive: Bring supplies; facilities are minimal.
Beaver Island feels remote: Weather on Lake Michigan can delay ferries and flights.
